Which Came First, The Chicken or The Egg?
This is a question that has puzzled the globe for many many years, however, it is a question that I find rather simple. I recently asked this question to my Twitter followers using the new Poll feature that Twitter offers.
The poll has been live for 24 hours now and the results were very fascinating to me: 46% said the chicken came first and 54% said that the egg came first. When the poll had just 15 minutes left, the chicken was in the lead with 60% of the vote, then a new swathe of voters kicked in. I wonder what peoples' reasons were for their choices, are they based on scientific reasoning or are they just basing their choice on the first answer that popped into their head?
It has long been my opinion that the egg must have come first because dinosaurs, being reptiles, laid eggs. These are the same dinosaurs from which chickens were mutated from (if you believe Darwin's theory (I do)). So it's logical that the egg came before the chicken, right?
Well science, it seems, disagrees with my sound reasoning. In an article by the Daily Mail from 2010, there is a claim that the chicken actually came first as researchers have found that "the formation of egg shells relies on a protein found only in a chicken's ovaries. Therefore, an egg can exist only if it has been inside a chicken".

I see this logic but I will still claim that they are wrong. They are assuming that the question is comparing a chicken and a chicken's egg, which I don't think it is. I read the question as a comparison between the first chicken and the first egg. I understand that people will interpret the question in many different ways but fundamentally, the egg most definitely came first. All life forms have evolved from fish-like creatures which would have laid eggs, this gave us lizard (laid eggs), this gave us dinosaurs (laid eggs), which eventually lead to chickens. Eggs were around for centuries before a chicken ever forced one out of it's tiny, confused cloaca.
Put plain and simple, the egg came first because egg-laying species pre-date the existence of chickens.
